Question: do we get to see more of Onizuka's prison life from time to time? Or is it still "weekly student needs help" formula?

Very rarely (maybe a page or so in between arcs). It's still "student of the week" formula.

Aww, that's too bad. I feel Fujisawa is missing some opportunities here.

He could start a prison riot, maybe get a prisoner who was wrongfully sent there free, etc....

It's been mentioned before, but what a bummer!! (I'm talking about the hiatus)

Does anyone know whether these kind of interruptions happened during the original publication of GTO (98-2002) or Shonan Junai Gumi? I don't generally follow manga so I don't really know if this break is normal.

Or could it be that the manga is not getting enough readership and Fujisawa wants to take a break and rethink things over (freshen the plot a bit, maybe). After all he's not young anymore and many people tend to lose their sense of humor with age...

I have no idea, but I do think manga going on hiatus is pretty common. Especially Fujisawa since he's always working on so many porojects at once...
