This question has been making my head hurt. Tokyopop calls the Manga Master "Tohru" but fan-subbers and people say "Toru", I have even seen his name "Touro". Which one is the corrext one?

It'd be more correct to say "tooru" because you write it as it (とおる ==> と(to)お(o)る(ru) ). In french, you write it Tôru (ô means oo in prononciation ^^) and some people, write it Tōru (ō means oo too).

yes, in english, it's tohru but if you just romanize the japanese name, you get tooru but in english, you don't pronounce it as in japanese

Yeah, basically there's a couple of official ways to romanize Japanese. Ones the Hepburn I think and I forget the other. Basically, the Hepburn way romanises long vowels as either "ô" or "ō". It doesn't matter which, both mean exactly the same thing. The other method however is more of an exact character conversion which would leave "oo" as "oo". However with this way a lot of other characters are converted very umm... I suppose literally is the best way to put it. For example, the character that is most closely read as "fu" is romanised as "hu". But anyway, there are a lot of variants of these two ways and even though they're the official way of doing things most companies actually ignore them and do things their own way. For example, Tokyopop tends to just write long vowels as short vowels, ie Ryuuji becomes Ryuji. With Fujisawa's name though, it's become quite common for companies to romanise long "o" sounds with a "h" afterward to avoid westerners pronouncing his name as "two-ru" or something .

Yes, they do the same in france (Pika Edition). They write Tokyo and not Tôkyô, etc... they ignore all those things but it's not very important

My Japanese teacher said that you write double Os as OU cause that's how it's done in Japanese. I guess it just gets romanized differently. So basically Tohru = Tooru = Touru = Tōru.

I think it is best to Romanise using the Hepburn system as BL outlined above.
Another commonly mispronounced Japanese language element is the ei in "Sensei". It is not "Sensay", but rather "Sensee". The "i" is used to elongate the "e" just like the "u" is used to elongate the "o".

Actually that's wrong Yoshio . His name is spelled とおる (tooru), not とうる (touru). Granted it's more common to elongate an "o" sound in Japanese by adding a "u" but there are still quite a number of words out there that are spelled with two "o"s. It can be pretty confusing, but I guess it's not so bad considering how we english speakers spell some or our words. Hehe this reminds me of the time when in an aural comprehension exam I did last year which featured a character named Tooru... and I think I was the only kid in the class who spelled it right XD.

Goes to show that you really have to see the Kanji sometimes to see how it is truly spelt (*smacks himself for not checking*), or know the word you're trying to spell.

Complicated indeed RealOne, but I'd go with the hepburn to spell this one, with the inflection above the single o and no h. "ô" or "ō".
