My solution: Buy the Japanese DVD box set, rip the subtitles from the fansub, burn new DVD based on the original ones, but with (selectable) subtitles added.

Of course, the proccess is a major pain the rear, but I've completed disc 1. Disc 2 has been giving me some trouble, but at least I'm closer to finishing the project than when I started, right?

Welp! Almost 13 and a half years later, I finally picked up this project again and finished it - although instead of creating DVDs, I ended up making my own DVD rips (not perfect, but certainly higher quality than the ones used for the old fansub) with soft subtitles. Creating DVDs at this point in time, in our age of streaming media and HD TVs, seems kinda pointless. Why now? I don't know, but I felt like watching the series again. It's been... a long, long time since I did. I still love it... Although now watching it also gives me this kind of bitersweet nostalgic feeling.
