Holy shit.
Quote:
Amazon Prime Video announced on Thursday that Tohru Fujisawa's GTO: The Early Years (Shōnan Junai-gumi) manga is inspiring a new live-action series that will debut on the streaming service on February 28. Kanichirō stars in the series as Eikichi Onizuka, while Daichi Kaneko stars as Ryuji Danma.

Pretty cool but I bet this will move way too fast if they want all of the story in there.

Yeah, probably.

EDIT: Okay, a few more details I've gleamed from various articles and google translate:
The drama will have 8 episodes (damn... only 8 episodes...)
It will be set in the 90s, with great care taken to match the look of that era
Also, it seems the logo has both the "Shonan Junai Gumi" and "Young GTO!" titles which is... weird. May be a sign they are aiming to also market this for international audiences?

I wonder if Amazon Prime will provide english subtitles. Or alternatively if any group will bother subbing it...

Well, I see no mention of this on the American Amazon site... Then again there doesn't appear to be any mention of it on the Japanese site yet, either. Maybe it'll be one of those things where we just won't know until it shows up. I wish they'd announce whether it's just gonna be in Japan or if they intend to release it in English as well... The inclusion of "Young GTO" in the title does kind of suggest they might be aiming for the international market, but on the other hand it could also just be a way to try to appeal to Japanese viewers who only know Onizuka from the GTO drama and may not know what Shonan Junai Gumi is...

WOW that is amazing news! The old one was too cheesy for my liking (plus it was never subbed)

Hopefully, it would pave the way for a potential anime adaptation? There have been a few older mangas recently adapted (Parasyte, Ushio to Tora, Karakuri Circus).

Wow, that's, uh... I never would have seen that coming o_O Maybe the recent GTO series was successful enough to warrant this? I mean, I'll definitely take a look at it should the opportunity present itself- they bothered to give Onizuka at least basically the right Regent hairstyle, so what more can one ask

Wow it actually looks pretty awesome!

Based on the trailer, it looks like the most popular arc, Midnight Angels, will be covered. Other tidbits I noticed include Kamakura Mad Dogs arc (pencil nose Saejima), Ayumi arc (girl wearing glasses riding behind Ryuji), Minamino (big tough looking character resembling him),.

Dare I say that.... It actually looks good even to me? Everything aside from the CGI cracks in the asphalt. How long until we can watch this subbed? It has my attention!

Agreed! I definitely think it's looking promising based on the trailer :) I mean, of course it'll synthesise different parts of the storyline to fit them in due to the length, but frankly I'm just pleased a) they're even making it; b) they got Onizuka and Ryuji looking pretty decent, so I'm optimistic!

The official website has posted the characters list and I've done a translation of all the characters.

Image

The cast gives us an indication of which arcs might be included in the series:

Introduction Arc (meeting Ayumi & Mariko)
Christmas Ski Trip Arc (Yarita Aina)
Valentine's Day Parade Arc (Hiroshi Abe)
Mad Dogs of Kamakura Arc (Seajima, Jun & Makoto)
Shonan Love Story Arc (Tsukai, Itou & Kaoru)
Ayumi Arc (Ayumi & Fumiya)
Nanno Arc (Minamino)
KT Butai Arc (Katsuyuki)
Idaten Gang Arc (Shinomi; really hoping for this one but lack of Takezawa in the character list makes me doubt it)
Midnight Angels Revival Arc (Nagisa, Akustu, Kamishima, Tamura, Enatsu)

One of the teachers, name translation as Kenji Inoue, looks to be a new character as I don't recall a character with that name in the manga. I'm quite surprised the police officer, Enatsu, makes the main cast list. He was a prominent character during the Midnight Angels Revival Arc but didn't have too much of an impact on the overall story.

The hype is real!
I never thought this moment would come, omg I can't even remember half the plot of SJG anymore...

If Amazon is involved there is a high chance they will sub it officially. At least they did with some other shows like Matsumoto Hitoshi's Documental.

I saw that on the website earlier but never got around to posting it here. Thanks for picking up my slack there, nosajj.

Anyway, yeah, this should give us a general idea of what arcs we should expect. It's been a while since I read SJG though, am I right in thinking that most of these arcs happen in the first half(ish) of the manga? I wonder if they're adapting the early stories so they can leave open the possibility of making a second season later, based on the later arcs?
